Home on the Island

Home on the Island

2005 • 20 min
In 1851, over one hundred and fifty residents of Arainn Mhor Island, off the coast of Donegal, were evicted from their homes. Speaking only Gaelic, they stayed together as a group upon arrival in the new world, and worked on the railroads in Canada. After a time, they found their way to Beaver Island, in the middle of Lake Michigan, where they established a new community, a miniature Arainn Mhor in exile. Home on the Island tells the story of the evictees and their journey to Beaver Island but, more importantly, it endeavoured to describe the character of the two communities who share the same ancestry, but are separated by the Atlantic Ocean.

2005 • 28 min
In the early 1960s Anthony Caro led a revolution in sculpture in Britain. In the years since his fertile and diverse practice has consistently challenged and extended what sculpture is, and what it might be. At the age of 80, Anthony Caro remains intensely active, working each day in his studio and overseeing every detail of an extensive retrospective at Tate. Preparations for the show are featured in this profile, along with many of his major works, filmed in Britain, Germany and the United States.
theEYE: William Turnbull

theEYE: William Turnbull

2005 • 26 min
William Turnbull is one of Britain’s most distinguished sculptors and painters. In the late 1940s he studied art in London and then spent time in Paris, and ever since he has rigorously explored a limited number of archetypal forms as well as the fundamentals of art’s languages. Over more than fifty years William Turnbull has returned again and again to the head and the mask, to the standing figure and the horse, as well as to possibilities of pared-down, often monochromatic painting. His simple objects, which draw on both primitive and classical ideas, often combine presence and poetry in unique ways.

Fossilization

Fossilization

2005 • 9 min
The video ‘Fossilization’ was produced as part of the ‘Memory Lane’ project, commissioned in 2005 by the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The traditional idea of soundtracks as translation and extension of moving images was reversed for the occasion: five video makers were requested to produce a work based on a composition by David Shea. Each individual filmmaker could draw out his own trajectory throughout the various musical layers. D’Haeseleer merged sound with image into an immersive panorama of fossilised shapes and traces. Images were distorted, layered and shaped into an apocalyptic spectacle in which vaguely recognisable shades and objects seem to be sucked up, into a parallel, enamelled world. Underneath all of these hermetical levels ’Fossilization’ comes forward as a meditation on the slip-off of Western civilisation to a pandemonium of mass-tourism, -media and -consumption.
