'Sisyphus' is a silent 16mm film shot on a Bolex exploring a journey that never ends. I made this film at renowned experimental filmmaker Phil Hoffman's Film Farm workshop in Mount Forest, Ontario. Originally, I wanted to create a simple statement about overcoming depression. The ultra short narrative in 'Sisyphus' uses heartbreak as a metaphor for depression, since depression is just that - being heartbroken about life. The creative process and the practice of handmaking films speaks to treating life as a work in progress, thereby positively embracing the permanence of Sisyphus in my life. The lush, organic imagery in 'Sisyphus' was created by hand-processing 16mm black and white footage in a bucket and hand-tinting and toning individual pieces of film.

The story of John Schenck and Robert Loyd, two men who have experienced Stonewall and Vietnam. However, their biggest battles have taken place in the small town they call home. They now are gay rights activists living in the rural town of Conway, Arkansas. They have organized a mock wedding on the Capitol steps in Little Rock, lead the first Conway Gay Pride Parade, and survived harassment from bigoted locals, including one who dumped 6,000 pounds of manure on John and Robert's yard. While John and Robert have orchestrated many protests and demonstrations, their most persuasive activism is the strength of their loving thirty year relationship

An unexpected proposal for a gay everyman. What is identity, and what is its price? What could be a very low-key pick-up scene soon morphs into a bazaar revelation and proposition. An absurd story that takes the standard right wing notion of the "homosexual agenda" and turns it on its head - but is not far from the truth.
On the Other Side of the River

On the Other Side of the River

2005 • 53 min • Italy, Slovenia
The film deals with the (non)memory of WW2 concentration camps in Italy, in which numerous Slovenian civilians were detained. Three concentration camps were situated just across the Slovenian-Italian border, and this is also where a new concentration camp - a detention center for migrants - was being built at the time of making this film. Further, the film discusses the issue of statelessness - by comparing everyday situations endured by the Roma people in Rome, Italy, and by the Erased people in Slovenia - they too were, and still often are, detained in Italian and Slovenian detention centers.

Oral Fixations

Oral Fixations

2005 • 15 min
15 minutes from the 7 hour animation. Oral Fixations is a single channel video installation that evolves over a 7 hour time period. The project is a darkly humorous look at a habit of endless consumption and the resulting accumulation of waste. A narrative gradually emerges from the on-screen action that depicts a large mouthed character who dances while flossing its one protruding tooth. A conveyor belt regularly delivers factory-farm fresh hams that the character delights in taking one large bite from and then tossing aside. Over the duration of the piece the hams begin to pile up in the room until at the end of seven hours the room is filled with the refuse of this gluttony. The viewer is encouraged to revisit the piece periodically throughout the day and see how the discarded hams build an oddly humorous environment of waste around the character.
