To embody moments of transition between two different worlds, worlds which look alike. There are only antechambers and settings. Being the mask one wears, I have lost my decency. Dream and lie, what is the prospect of a one-eyed man? I question the dreamer’s figure as being simultaneously the emitter and the receiver of its own visions, the director and unique spectator of its projections.
Antonym of Concord(e)

Antonym of Concord(e)

2005 • 9 min • Japan
A work whose title is the idea. Shot at the famous Place de la Concorde in Paris. The square owes its discord neither to its Egyptian obelisk nor to the fact that it was the site of the execution of King Louis by guillotine. The film was shot with Super8, Kodacrome 80 film and has been re-shot with an optical printer during editing. The mixing of stills with 24 frames/second film creates visuals with a ‘discordant passage of time’.
Under Discussion

Under Discussion

The Puerto Rican island of Vieques was used by the US Navy for sixty years, leaving its landscape scarred with bomb-craters and its ecosystem severely contaminated. In 2003, a civil disobedience campaign was successful in forcing the military out, and the land has now been designated as a federal wildlife reserve. But this designation entails its own violence, marginalizing the demands of island residents that it be fully decontaminated and turned over to municipal management. This conflict is the point of departure for Under Discussion. An overturned conference table has been retrofitted with an engine and rubber grafted from a small fishing boat. In liberal thought, the table is a common architectural trope used for symmetrical communication and the non-violent resolution of conflict. Yet it often fails to account for the inequalities that structure spaces of negotiation.

In part Buddhist koan, in part urban love story, the film poses the question of unconditional love, and suggests that there may be an answer. Set in a lonely Berlin petrol station, it tells of the chance encounter between two strangers - a young Turkish woman who works at the petrol station and an enigmatic Russian immigrant who walks in one night. Abruptly he opens a conversation which leads them to embark on a fantastic journey, and to an end that no one is prepared for.

In a cyclical structure from dark to light, this film is a reflection on growing up in Beirut during the civil war years and adapting to the "post war" life: accepting the body that is in ruin, and learning to live in the city that is always already in ruin.

Night wandering in a labyrinthine city. Layout of roads, avenues, deserted streets, hostile architectures where the homeless, shadows of flesh and blood, lost in the power of the city, silently die. The film carries us away in the madness race of the city, at night, submerged by the insomniac, alienating waves of the media, through which the human voice tries, like a distant echo, an obstinate wake up call.

The Kings of Christmas

The Kings of Christmas

2005 • 10 min
Every year, starting on December 26, Steve Pancini begins to think about what animated-doll he will add to his lawn for next year's Christmas-even though he's already got hundreds of such dolls and has just taken weeks off from his job to maintain this year's display. Pancini, a Staten Island electrician, and others such as Frank Seddio, an Assemblyman in Canarsie, Brooklyn, compete to have the biggest, brightest, most over-the-top Christmas house in New York City. This short documentary shows what motivates these men and what it takes for them to pull it off bigger and flashier every year--despite the sometime objections of angry neighbors.
You Made Me Love You

You Made Me Love You

Twenty-one dancers are held by your gaze. Losing contact can be traumatic. Twenty-one dancers play a game of cat and mouse with an unpredictable camera. Disoriented, the viewer is fixed by the gaze of dancers who crowd the frame. …On the one hand this is like looking at a group of aliens who have never seen anything like the camera (or you) before. The concentration of the faces on what is before them takes away their self-consciousness, and like a series of Thomas Ruff portraits they have an unsettling air of insouciance. But ultimately, the thought one is drawn to, and the allegory the title suggests, concern the contemporary obsession with becoming visible through some sort of brush with celebrity, however brief, demeaning or meaningless that might be.

Panni is a visually arresting work in its formal structure and visual expression of colors. The subject matter of the film is a row of bed sheets flapping on a clothesline, drying in the wind. The colors punch through the screen as orange sheets flutter against a green backdrop of grass and trees.

Jane's Window

Jane's Window

2005 • 11 min
My grandmother cherished her large dining room window for the opening it afforded her onto the world. From this perspective she would espy the arrival of friends and family, contemplate the change of seasons and reflect on time past. On the shelves of this window she collected mementos of a childhood in China, life as an artist, and the travels in between. Combining images of my own travels through Japan and China with images of the home my grandparents built, Jane’s Window reflects on the passing down of memory, curiosity and creativity across generations.
