The Room of Chromatic Mystery

The Room of Chromatic Mystery

2006 • 7 min
'The Room of Chromatic Mystery' is (...) another three-colour separation film, shot in the living room of the Cantrills’ old house in Brunswick. An ordinary domestic scene, with flowers and carved artifacts on a table by the window; but the borderlines of these objects quiver, and everything is bathed in a spectral or perhaps extraterrestrial glow. The mysterious soundtrack blends voices from earlier films – including the whispering of the singers in 'Two Women' – with discussions in a foreign language on a shortwave radio, drowned in static like the hiss of time escaping. An image of a place. An echo of a voice. (Jake Wilson)

During the July War of 2006, as warships evacuated foreigners and dual-nationality Lebanese, the “State of Israel” intercepted the broadcast of The Voice of the People radio station to deliver an audio message to Lebanese citizens. Israel interrupts the broadcast of "Sawt Al-Sha'eb," as Fairuz finishes performing Talal Haidar's poem "Wahdun" (They Alone) and starts singing another verse in which she declares her eternal love for Lebanon. Meanwhile, ships are evacuating those fleeing the flames of war—three enormous contradictions. Coincidence can carry so much meaning.

"AERODYNAMICS OF THE BLACK SUN is an alchemical process reflecting decay and regeneration in the solar realm. The elasticity of materials under chemical change creates metaphors & abstractions for manipulated plastics burning in the gate. These pyrographic ruptures are inspired by entropic phenomena and disintegration, as well as by artists who explore surface distress, puncture & erosion, such as Yves Klein, Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri." -- B.E.

Personalised instruments are used to transform loops of pure black and white frames into an immersive riot of perceptual phenomenon in colour, motion and sound. Bruce will employ four adapted 16mm projectors, the motors modified, brass grids retro-fitted between lens and gate. A stroboscopic and intense sensory overload of flashing abstract forms, cut to ribbons by modified projectors. You’re met with a white strobing circle pulsing on screen and slowly transformed as additional, overlapping projectors create strange halo’s and spheres, odd 3D expansions and contractions. As more projectors are added the image is shredded under a beating grid, color and form thrumming in front of your eyes until, as the last projector dims and you’re left in the dark, crazy blue tendrils follow your gaze, after-images burned on the retina like a delicate coda to Bruce’s performances. -Kill Your Timid Notion festival

News on Sunday was a left-wing tabloid that launched to great fanfare in 1987 and went bankrupt just eight weeks later. It was one of the boldest business ventures ever attempted by the far left and it was a disaster. A group who met through a tiny left-wing faction called Big Flame were convinced it was possible to market a left-wing mass-circulation newspaper. They were led by ex-Ford worker Alan Hayling (now head of BBC Documentaries) under the editorial leadership of John Pilger, who walked out before the paper had even launched.
