A Slow Boat to Somewhere: Exploring French Polynesia

A Slow Boat to Somewhere: Exploring French Polynesia

2006 • 24 min
Ride along on a rustic, and rusting, Polynesian cargo boat as it makes deliveries to 21 of the globe's most isolated coral reef atolls, in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean. Along the 3,000-mile route meet black pearl divers, the man who found the Kon Tiki, Marlon Brando's 'Mutiny' girlfriend, a ship laden with NFL-sized crewman and many more - all set against the backdrop of a fast-and-forever changing Paradise. I jumped on the cargo boat for one of its monthly, 3,000-mile delivery jobs, taking us to ports-of-call that were literally just piles of sand and rock washed up on rims of coral, halfway between Australia and South America, each home to populations ranging from seven to two hundred fifty people. The trip took us through the Tuamotus, a chain of 78 atolls that sailors going back to Magellan dubbed the dangerous archipelago for its low-lying, barely visible, wooden-boat-sinking reefs.

Harding to Sarah Palin, the wacky tacky character of Alaska is explored in side-splitting, music-filled extravaganza of epic proportions.
Interval

Interval

Originally shot on Super 8 film, Interval is a personal journey about shadows and memories, exploring notions of origins and of displacement. Using time-lapse photography, Suki recorded passages of time within her old ancestral house, now dilapidated in her former village in China. The dream-like film conveys the passing of time through a subtle play of light and shadows within interior and exterior spaces - metaphors for private (imaginary) and public spaces (reality).

Inside a small adobe kitchen, Elsa Romero-Murrado, a midwife in the rural town of Capacmarca, takes us through rarely seen birthing ceremonies. Maria is a middle-aged single woman with three children. Saman is a newly married young man. Arash is an eighteen-year-old high-school dropout. All three are transsexuals living in Iran. INSIDE OUT features intimate conversations with Maria, Saman, and Arash, allowing them to tell their stories, including the lifelong struggle to come to terms with their gender dysphoria, how this mind/body conflict has affected their everyday behavior, and the impact of hormone therapy and sex-change surgery on their lives. The film also includes revealing interviews with a Muslim cleric, who explains that the majority of Iran's religious leaders consider transsexuality to be a human rights issue and therefore support gender reassignment surgery; a psychiatrist, who explains the difference between homosexuality and transsexuality and how the condition cannot be cured psychologically; and a surgeon, who discusses the nature and the difficulties of the required surgery.

The video,”…like dust in the wind…”, was made from the animation of a sequence of 991 photographs captured in a single action (four hours long) with handcrafted pinhole cameras (using matchboxes). It shows, in 3.5 minutes, the transmutation of the space/movement of the fair in a 360 degree turn. It ranges from the frenetic movement, the hustle and bustle, from the beginning of the fair to the emptying of that space.
