Global Warning

Global Warning

2009 • 34 min
Ronnie Romero and David Cervenka have teamed up to create a truly unique collective based on years of filming and editing wakeboarding and other action sports. The title "Global Warning" speaks volumes of the film's content. Breaking the mold of your typical wakeboard video, our riders have been selected based on their style, character, work ethic, and the desire to push the sport to the next level. We're taking eight of the sports top riders from around the globe and bringing them together to exploit this international talent pool in locations all around the world. Ranging from behind the boat, to cable, to rails and winching, the riding in this video will be as distinct as each rider's style. This combination will result in some of the highest level of riding and entertainment in a wakeboard film seen to date, not to mention an exhilarating HD wake experience. Global Warning will be setting a new industry standard by becoming the first wake film to be released on Blu-Ray HD Disc.
The Use of Movement

The Use of Movement

2009 • 16 min
The Use of Movement considers the formal edges of the frame and the way in which camera movement, whether slight or dramatic, is ascribed with meaning. A series of tableaux are played out—with foreign language voice-overs providing the only real narrative context. A sleepless woman is haunted by images she has watched on the internet; a man drives an ice cream truck down a barren street; a couple ride a motorscooter in the twilight; steam rises from manhole covers. Each scene is an incomplete narrative—and the monologues in Spanish, German, Bengali, and Italian only serve to provide a degree of abstraction to the sound treatment—distancing most of us from the more visceral aspects of the film form and creating occasional dissonances with what’s happening visually.

Director Emmanuel Lefrant explores the mechanisms of memory by entangling the image of a landscape in Africa with a film strip that had been buried and subjected to erosion in the same place the sequence was shot. With these landscapes in fusion, invisible takes shape with the visible, where the first dissolves itself into the second and vice versa.

Simon, At the Crack of Dawn

Simon, At the Crack of Dawn

2009 • 16 min
Simon, At the Crack of Dawn is the fifth film that Pierre Creton and Vincent Barré have made together. As the film is the quintessence of poetic cinema, it is impossible to lock any subject into the confines of a form, which is nonetheless as round as a cob loaf. What we can try to write about is the resonance of signs, the vibrations of matter and the mysterious radiation of meaning between the images and sounds….If the film were to lend itself to a summary, a single sentence would suffice and would describe the most banal reality: “Before dawn, while people are still asleep in their beds, a baker makes his bread”. But this would be to disregard two shots that ill fit such a narrative….and which tip Simon, at the crack of dawn towards a tale of fantasy.

The arrival of a new worker to a jeans factory causes changes to the rhythms of the workplace. This mysterious narrative integrates personal and collective history with fiction. The visuals were created with both found images and original photography reproduced on acetate sheets which were subsequently sewn together and projected onto a wall and video-taped. This mixed-media work is a reflection on the repetitive labour and materiality of textile work and the im/possibilities for resistance to challenging working conditions.

“The first house I bought was on 43rd Street in Pittsburgh. In this silent Super 8 triptych-projection, I documented the facade of each house on 43rd Street on 36 frames of film (center screen), while the oldest tree on the street﹘which was in my backyard﹘is shown in time-lapse over the course of several days (left and right screens). These films helped me locate myself along a continuum of time and space, relieving an anxiety of “ownership” with a sense of belonging.” (written by Tara Merenda Nelson)
