Human Zoo: Science's Dirty Secret

Human Zoo: Science's Dirty Secret

2009 • 48 min
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, scientists were so fascinated by race that thousands of indigenous people from all over the world were put on display in human zoos. They were not intended as merely entertaining freakshows but also scientific demonstrations of racial difference. Across the western world millions gawped in fascination at these "uncivilised savages" and would depart convinced of the superiority of the white race. Human Zoo: Science’s Dirty Secret explores the phenomenon of human zoos and tells the poignant story of Ota Benga, a Batwa pygmy from the Belgian Congo, who was first put on display at the 1904 St Louis World's Fair and then the Bronx Zoo where he was labelled as the 'missing link'.

Acapella

Acapella

2009 • 5 min
Acapella presents clips from a stock-footage library, still bearing their time codes, of objects such as an apple, a basketball, and a burgeoning pile of popcorn, morphing over chroma-key-ready single-color backgrounds. Lonergan sets this collection to Sting’s a cappella version of the Police’s “Message in a Bottle.” That song’s refrain of “sending out an SOS” seems to echo Lonergan’s Web collage brb, 2008, made from merely two elements: the lowercase letters of its acronymic title, scrolling right to left, placed over an embedded, looping sound file of what one at first assumes to be the Morse-code distress signal (three short, three long, three short), but upon careful listening discovers to spell out “brb” (one long, three short; one short, one long, one short; and one long, three short). Be right back.

Omg Bff Lol

Omg Bff Lol

2009 • 6 min
OMG BFF LOL is a three-part animation that is part of Charlie White’s Girl Studies series. The animations introduce Tara and Blakey, two American teens caught up in the ecstatic fervor of shopping and the melancholy dilemmas of boredom and emotional fragility. Spun out like a serialized cartoon, OMG BFF LOL operates like a Trojan horse for White’s critique of America’s cycle of consumption and repulsion. It acts as a monologue on the terror of “wanting vs. having” and the girls' need to find gravity in the levity and privilege that they take for granted.
