"Between Hands is a double video. It revolves around the theme of knols and string games: both "cat's cradle", which lives on in our culture as a game for little girls, as well as the similar games played by almost all Indigenous peoples, with an astonishing variety of figures. The video alternates between reflections on subjectivity from a text by the writer Ani Bustamante, and a selection of poems by the Cree community." - Eva Lootz

Rehearsal for a Reunion (with the Father of Pottery)

Rehearsal for a Reunion (with the Father of Pottery)

2011 • 14 min
In Rehearsal for a Reunion (with the Father of Pottery) (2011), Fujiwara uses a difficult relationship with a distant father as the starting point for a humorous, circuitous video that reenacts a real-life experience through the “rehearsal” of a screenplay about it. Fujiwara visited Japan to reconnect with his father, and using craft as a kind of catharsis, they together created a tea set in the style of mid-twentieth-century British ceramist Bernard Leach. The tea set becomes the central prop in the titular rehearsal depicted in the film, with the artist in the role of the son and an actor as his father. The video progresses through enmeshed layers of fiction and reality, culminating in a moment of destruction and release.

(New Logue Lane) 1. The sun was either setting or rising, it was impossible to tell at that particular moment. 2. Maybe, Maybe not. 3. He said we could solve his problem using methods more advanced than squinting and meditation [concentration], more advanced than anything we could have imagined. And, even better, someone might make a fortune doing it. 4. Holding a dusty wooden prism, he asked each of us to choose: “Architecture or Revolution.” Maybe it was the thick accent, or maybe it was something else entirely, but I swear he said Architecture or Resolution. …unfortunately, we chose Architecture.

Waves of variation reveal the contours of impossible form, as if the process of decay were reversed, causing delicate structures to emerge from the grain of chaos. “McElwee’s work is pure image-making…quite beautiful.” - Robert Duffy, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Encounter

The Encounter

2011 • 21 min
The video work "The Encounter“ shows a man, who places a chair in the middle of a public square. He takes a seat. Gradually, several hundred protagonists enter the square and approach the seated man in order to shake his hand. The simple and habitual gesture of the handshake is repeated so often that it transforms itself into a meaningful ritual. While the reason for the ceremonious meeting remains unknown, the encounter between the participants becomes charged with tension. A moment of connection occurs, not only between the persons, but also between the participants and the square, which is transformed into a stage.

Hear To There

Hear To There

A perfectly logical camera placement renders action as a visual paradox rooted in the analogue world where image and sound took up physical space and required movement to be revealed. We ride alone with the world’s most famous piece of music watching an image that is both still and moving at the same time. Sound and image in this film are on a collision course as there is not enough space for both on the surface on the record. We literally hear until we get there. Hear to There is a lighthearted visual parable that raises questions about the representation and relationship of image and sound.
Sir Bobby Charlton: Football Icon

Sir Bobby Charlton: Football Icon

2011 • 60 min • United Kingdom
To complement the BBC Two drama 'United', BBC Sport presents a very special documentary looking back at the remarkable career of arguably England's greatest and most iconic footballer, Sir Bobby Charlton. Sir Bobby was a key member of the England team that won the World Cup on home soil in 1966 and part of a Manchester United team touched by success and tragedy in equal measure. Charlton survived the Munich air disaster in 1958, which killed several of his team-mates dubbed the 'Busby Babes'. He became a crucial figure in the club's resurgence, winning two league titles and unforgettably in 1968 the European Cup against Benfica.
