"I interview my great-uncle Jose Elias Awad about his Berlin years (late 50's to late 60's), when he was finishing his doctorate in Economics at the Humboldt University in East Berlin. General Secretary of the Colombian Communist Party at the time, Jose Elias married Esther Bloss and on the day of their wedding in the Sudeten he left to help build the Berlin Wall. He told off Che for not having read Marx, hung out with Tamara Bunke and advised against the rise up in arms of the newly founded guerrilla group ELN (National Liberation Army) in Colombia. In 1968 he returned to Colombia after being expelled from the Party, and grew apart from his children, because of geographical distance and political ideology." - Juana Awad

Irijalba reflects upon how human beings have designed objects, inspired by forms and functions found in nature; and how in turn they have attempted to adapt nature to their own needs, thus profoundly modifying it. Humankind has indeed created some kind of a chimeric environment wherein it has become impossible to tell apart that which is human made or altered from that which is still natural. He uses photography and video to document actions or collect evidence. More recently, he has also been researching engineered materials to create sculptures with a definite organic flair, reflecting the human desire to replicate nature, using artificial materials.

The Return of the Buffalo

The ‘Indians of All Tribes’ group occupied Alcatraz prison, which closed in 1963, from 1969 to 1971 in order to build a cultural and educational center. When Söderquist visited the island in 1970, the occupants had built up a functioning society with jobs, family life and schools. The text ‘Indian America Land’ was posted on the outside of a building. In a voice-over, school teacher Bob Bradley discusses political inequality, social problems and the difficult situation for the Native American population in the USA, as well as the background for the occupation. The Return of the Buffalo is a stylized and unique documentary (the only filmed material from the occupation), a black-and-white depiction in which architecture, former prison buildings, politics, music and dance are interwoven with local radio, conversations and discussions into a focused whole. The film became the starting point for Söderquist’s Alcatraz – The Return (2013).
