House of Psychic

House of Psychic

"Whilst staying for 3 months in New York City in 2014, I noticed that the city had a unique presence of psychic stores. Seeing their signs on the streets reminded me of how my mother used to sell power stones, herbs and spiritual material in Tokyo. My mother became interested in psychic spirituality after she went through a hard situation, she became engrossed in its power. When I told this story to my friend Lauren who lives in New York, she was surprised and told me she had just been to psychic therapy to try to get a bad romance off her mind. We started to talk about love which we lost and the possibilities of new love. Sometimes you have to rely on things you can’t see in life, like the power of the psychic. This video is about the tension between real and illusionary life, irremediable sadness and women dealing with difficulty. The actress in the film is Lauren mixed with her interpretation of my mother’s story." -UMMMI.

The Cradle of Storms

2014 • 27 min • United States of America
Alex Gray, Josh Mulcoy, and Pete Devries went on a journey through the remote Aleutian Arc of Alaska, the birthplace of storm systems that send swell back to the rest of us in civilization. They braved heavy weather, flew on rickety prop planes, and ate seal meat en route to discovering one of the best cold-water slabs in the world. The film follows the cold-water crew as they traverse the island on quad bikes, tracking pulses of swell to remote bays and never before surfed points. Set against the stunning volcanic backdrop of the Aleutian Islands, The Cradle of Storms is cold-water surf exploration at its finest.

Bob Geldof: The Moment

2014 • 18 min
Bob Geldof grew up listening to the radio on the outskirts of Dublin, where his loneliness and resentment of prescribed drudgery manifested itself in an all-consuming desire to escape. It was an almost quintessential rock-star story — rebellion, transgression, fame, drugs, escapades, fading glory. That is, until he turned on the news one late-October evening in 1984 and saw a short story about a famine that moved him and changed his life. The next year, Mr. Geldof was in the Sahel region of Africa, overseeing distribution of the $140 million he and his fellow musicians ultimately helped to raise in one of the largest charity efforts ever organized.

Parallel I–IV

Parallel I–IV

2014 • 43 min • Germany
Cinema’s onscreen worlds have always borne an indexical bond to the real. What happens when computer-generated video game images usurp film as the predominant medium of visual world-making? How does one’s relation to onscreen heroes shift when we no longer identify with real bodies? Harun Farocki’s four-part Parallel I–IV (2012–14) takes up these questions, tracing how, in just over 30 years, video games have developed from two-dimensional schematics to photorealistic environments.
