2001 • 60 min
A Flea Market Documentary is a new PBS special and an all-American celebration of open-air shopping across the country. On any weekend, there may be no better place to find out what makes America great than at a flea market. A Flea Market Documentary is an unabashed celebration of the unusual people and the enticing things that can be found in parking lots, fairgrounds, drive-ins, sidewalks, and wherever else someone has posted a sign saying "Flea Market." It's capitalism mixed with craziness. It's amazing old stuff, great salespeople, the ancient tradition of the open-air market, and the possibility of finding a bargain, all uniting shoppers across the nation. Produced by WQED Pittsburgh, A Flea Market Documentary travels from the gigantic Rose Bowl Market in Pasadena, California, to the busy but modest- sized Eastern Market in Washington, DC, talking with organizers, vendors, food merchants and shoppers.

Ciccio Colonna

Ciccio Colonna

2001 • 15 min • Italy
Vito is a bartender from Pegognaga, a small apparently anti-tourist town that in winter is obliterated by the fog and in summer by the heat. As a joke between friends, he ends up getting stuck between two concrete columns placed in front of his bar. However, the joint is so perfect that no one is able to free it anymore. The mayor arrives with the brigade, then the ASL nurses, the firefighters, but there is nothing to be done: Ciccio gets stuck and demolition projects are even made that arouse the terror of the tenants of the building. The only possible evolution of the story is that Ciccio, now known by all as "Cicciocolonna", gets stuck between the columns and becomes "a coincidence". In fact, the TV that spreads the news arrives: Cicciocolonna becomes a point of reference for the whole country. A kind of living monument, but also a sort of essay to which people go to ask for advice and even the numbers to play the lottery.

The Princess and the Pea

The Princess and the Pea

2001 • 7 min • United States of America
The Princess and the Pea follows the search of a small country family (the very large & robust Mama Pat and the thin & wise Papa Joe) to find a wife for their son (the hunky, but simple Billy Boy). Set in a Dr. Seuss-like realm of otherworldly landscapes near the end of the 19th century, these odd characters promise wealth to any princess who will marry their son. Princess Vee arrives, much to the suspicion of Mama and the disdain of Billy who doesn't want a "real princess," but a "real girl" to fall in love with. In homage to the classic fairytale, Mama devises a plan to test the Princess. In the process, the family discovers that Princess Vee is not a royal princess, but is something more unique. Futhermore, the wealth that the family offers is not money, but love and friendship. In the end, Billy Boy and Princess Vee ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after.
