Ya Rayah

Ya Rayah

2001 • 6 min • France
Discreetly zany, Ya Rayah collects heterogeneous objects and images. Throughout this list we find smoking shoes, errant typographies, x-rays of feet... The assembly of these materials creates a playful journey, revealing the movement of writing in the process of being written. Where we find the poetic gesture dear to the imagination of ALIS, whose work is inspired by the methods of Oulipo. The approach of ALIS, a group founded by Dominique Soria and Pierre Fourny, is not standard. It focuses on the search for a new expression using different artistic disciplines. Usually their compositions are exhibited on stage or exhibited in art galleries. After La Complaint du Progrès, this film once again opens up, to the music of Dahmane el Harrachi, a rich field of investigation into their joyful and cleverly organized words.

The video is composed of 13 episodes that tell some moments of the days of Genoa. From the climate of the Red Zone to the police charges on the procession of 21 July, to the situation around the body of Carlo Giuliani in Piazza Alimonda. The shooting is a selection of images shot by Giacomo Verde and other independent video makers connected to different groups. The video’s intention is to tell what the media fail to show because they are trapped in the rules of communication-show and scoop. So many episodes are commented by texts of "militant poetry" in order to provide reflective ideas that go beyond the contingency of facts, and others use images "effected" (rallenty, velocity etc.) and an original sound commentary in order to go beyond the documentary data still present. A video that wants to be an instrument of emotional and political reflection, for the various components of the anti-g8 movement, on the different issues raised by the days of Genoa.

Daily routine in an empty restaurant car on a long-distance train. Deserted tables, a slow-moving staff. The waiter leans at the window, unhurriedly cleaning his fingernails. The cook and the waitress bide their time patiently. Gestures of waiting. Communication no longer seems necessary, as the well-coordinated routine functions smoothly without it. Only the train´s clattering on the rails is audible - an monotonous and soothing sound. This monotony is echoed in the forced lethargy of the restaurant-car staff. It seems to be a ghost train, a train without passengers. Then the tableau comes alive as if wakened by an inaudible signal. The three figures begin to sweep and wipe: The car must be cleaned thoroughly before it reaches the terminus.
