Like ghosts, the temporarily shut down cruise ships lie in the port of Hamburg. A young man comes into town and is stranded on the riverbank, waiting for a message. He watches couples strolling along in the sunset and gets himself some sweets. In a moment of collective pause, ISLANDS IN THE CITY captures a fragile romance. There is a departure in the air, the destination of which no one seems to know.

In the glistening light of the vast Andean mountains lies the village of Contay, three hours away from the nearest bigger city. The myth here says that who dreams of snakes, will argue with their husband the next day. Dreaming of music, brings good news instead. This is the home of Elisa Taboada and her family. She is campaigning in the regional elections as a community speaker, aiming to bring more attention to women’s rights.

Shot on analogue 16mm film, STUDIO examines facets of surfaces, materiality, traces and marks. Confronting film studio and gym, the film deals with emotional as well as physical exposure. Everything becomes a performance: actions, emotions, expectations and gender.

The Mirror Egg

To be shown as 16mm film or as longer expanded cinema performance with modified 16mm projector and live sound. Being home during lockdown inspired me to make this miniature sitcom set where every day something new happens; and to take the camera on walks. The absurd situations for the in inhabitants of the filmset and myself result in this layered stream of images. The middle part is an uncut 3 minute roll of film that was scripted like a program: A 4-bit binary code and a long heximal code, written on paper, were used for positioning, layering and repeating what was filmed on this 30 meter.

study for The Shannon Limit (16mm) Work in progress just back from the lab in which the capacity of our perception is tested with endless frame per frame shots that are related, but not animated and projected at a non standard framerate. Inspired by a limit introduced by Claude Shannon in 1948: Channel capacity can be understood as the maximum amount of information that can be transmitted and fully recovered in a specific channel.

Exploring friendship, loneliness, fear, banality and the unexpected humour in the situation, this is an honest and surprising documentary that poses the question: how does adversity affect creativity?

To compensate for all the time apart, they have developed rituals to keep a sense of togetherness. Making coffee, food, and taking pictures of Andrew after work.
