POCKET is a micro-short that works with the themes of divorce, nuclear family, and memory palace while using miniature furniture. It is a piece that combines form and function. As a child of divorce, I sometimes look back to when I was 13, to heal as I forge ahead creating my own family with my husband. The words of Khalil Gibran guided this piece as I worked with a microscopic camera to capture footage of the eye, reminiscent of one of my favorite Blade Runner scenes. “The eye of a human being is a microscope, which makes the world seem bigger than it really is.” Creative play and working intuitively allows you to discover more about yourself. I’ve always been inspired by the photography of Laurie Simmons, especially her highly staged scenes with dolls and objects on legs that reference domestic life. And especially now during this lingering pandemic, I’ve been thinking about how my life has shrunk a little bit--smaller, sharper, focused. I feel a renewed sense of what is most important. Small everyday moments feel a little more special and wholesome now.
