If you don't understand the context in which this short animated film was made, you'd probably quickly dismiss it. However, this would be a huge mistake as it's super-important to the history of computer generated animation.Back in 1987, CGI was still relatively new. Pixar had only produced three shorts by that time and they tended to be extremely simple. And, such projects took years and were STILL created using massive mainframe computers--as PCs were not fast enough or complex enough to do this sort of work. And, most importantly, rendering software had to be created by anyone wanting to do such work. It was a very primitive time for the most primitive sort of CGI.If this film had been made in the 1990s or beyond, I wouldn't have been impressed. After all, the balloon man and balloon dog were incredibly simple CGI characters. However, given the severe limitations of software and computers, this is awfully good--and the bright and colorful look tends to make up for some of the deficiencies of the style of animation. Worth a look--particularly if you are a fan of early CGI.

When a pretty girl's dog is frozen into a giant ice cube, Pooch has Old King Cold warm things up until a vengeful polar bear changes the weather settings to "Storm".Many of the most frequently used gags in cartoons during this period were transformation gags, in which something turned to another. This cartoon plays a lot with that idea. When Pooch tells Old King Cold to "Turn on the Heat", His Majesty does just that, to the tune of the song from KEEP YOUR SUNNY SIDE UP. In that movie, this tune always produces the most bizarre choreography, full of sexual energy, giant bananas and similar effects. Here it converts Eskimo girls in shapeless leather into hula dancers.Even though this cartoon is definitely pre-Code, Lantz' staff kept all the stuff safely on the symbolic level -- and no giant bananas. It's all amusingly bizarre.

Tom and Jerry have fun at the circus and then show their acrobatic talents on a tightrope. They get into trouble with an ornery lion and are chased from the Big Top by the feline's friends. When the defend themselves by spraying the lions away with an elephant's trunk, they accidentally flood the circus but are able to float away unscathed.

Fatty invents a liquid with a property that makes objects resilient and unbreakable. Unfortunately, in his rush to get out of the house to demonstrate his invention, he unknowingly grabs a jar of hard cider instead of the jar which holds his wonder liquid. To make matters worse, as he drives to the demonstration, a football-sized beehive falls from a tree onto the cargo bed of his truck.

Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse in all Mexico, runs to the rescue of his two drunken rodent friends, Pablo and Fernando, who keep wandering into the hungry clutches of an alley cat.
