In the early 1920s, the Felix the Cat cartoons were about the best and most popular cartoon shorts you could find. However, by the early 1930s, the series was dead. Why? Well, the biggest reason is that the films were very original and creative in the early versions--far ahead of their time. But the quality of the films didn't improve and the competition sure did. With the creation of Disney's first shorts using the Disney name, the quality clearly was better than Felix and instead of retooling the character dramatically to catch up to Mickey Mouse, the studio and its creator kept making the same sort of pictures. Here in "Felix the Cat in False Vases" they FINALLY did something creative--but it was much too little much too late. While Mickey was a talking mouse, here Felix and the rest of the characters have weird sound effects for voices and they were added post-production...and the results are pretty dreadful compared to the competition. Other than a few cute sight gags (such as having the dog dig to China so Felix could replace the broken vase), the character is pretty tame and less fun than his early 20s version. Sad to watch...mostly because it's not all that funny and Felix COULD be tremendously funny.

Bombastus, her old father, has created a marvelous and big clock crowded with little characters (animated puppets). On each hour ring, one of the twelve knights of the clock comes into motion. They're all in love with the princess but a strong black knight doesn't agree... It's not a happy end. So Yolande will dive deep into her dreams, maybe to change the story. It's the second part of the movie. Sylph, master of this imaginary earth and Ondin, master of the aquatic world are the main characters. Yolande and then the man of her dreams join this strange world...

The great French filmmaker René Clair crafted this elegant sepia-toned profile of Paris's iconic landmark almost forty years after the Eiffel Tower took its first bow (at the 1889 Exposition Universelle). It clearly still fascinates and awes in this loving and playful tribute. LA TOUR takes the viewer first up and then down the mighty structure while also acting as a tribute to its eponymous designer, Gustave Eiffel. The film initially burrows into blueprints and photographs of the earliest stages of its construction ahead of the opening of the World's Fair but Clair's film revels in the completed structure itself, reverently scaling its heights and accompanying tourists on up through the various levels toward the topmost landing. Clair also makes strategic use of double exposures and dissolves in capturing the mechanical exuberance of the tower lifts (which help make the great swooping steel latticework edifice a bounding symbol of the modern age). - Robert Avila
