Birdcage takes place in a tightly controlled society where young people are locked in cages around their heads until the day of their arranged marriage. This society is led by a mysterious religious figure named the "Cleric" whom leads a monastic group that holds the individual key to each cage. Nadia, a young girl expected to marry, discovers that her mother is having an affair with the Cleric. Nadia blackmails the Cleric for the key to her cage. Nadia tries to convince her friend Alya to steal the key for her cage so that they can escape the commune together, despite their fear of the unknown world outside.
