Known worldwide as the creator of Black Square, Kazimir Malevich is often presented primarily within the Russian and Soviet history of art. This film looks beyond the iconic painting to explore the cultural environment that shaped the artist before his revolutionary artistic language emerged.
Through historical research, archival sources, and cinematic reconstruction, the film returns to Malevich’s childhood, formative years, Ukrainian cultural environment, and his connection with Kyiv. It explores how memory, landscape, family, music, and artistic education contributed to the development of his visual thinking.
Kazimir Malevich. Black Square invites the viewer to look at one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century from a broader Ukrainian cultural perspective.
