Synopsis
The protagonist, Xiao-En, is a second-generation Indonesian immigrant who grows up caught between prejudice and conflict. A speech contest leads him into the untold story of his mother, who has the identity of a new immigrant, and in the end, he comes to terms with his own identity.
The work uses the ingredients of Indonesian curry to carry the characters’ identities. Curry powder represents the Indonesian memories of Xiao-En and his mother, cinnamon powder represents the strict teacher, and pepper represents the other people around them. The colors of the plate shift with the situation, reflecting the emotions of the moment. As the speech gradually unfolds, the audience below the stage has also quietly been stained with the colors of curry, suggesting that by the end of the story, different cultures have in fact already blended together in silence.
